Divorce Suit Alleges `Internet Infidelity’ by Best Selling Author
``This book is a virtual diary detailing the respondent’s infidelity to his wife,’’ an attorney for Beth Schakowski alleges in divorce papers filed Monday. ``It is a written record of astounding betrayal on an emotional and financial level.’’
Schakowski is married to Adam Schakowski, whose annonymously written pornographic novel The Electric Adventures of Alvin has sold more than 500,000 copies and has spawned a national debate on issues of pornography, religion and the Internet.
The divorce suit publicly reveals the author’s identity for the first time.
Among Beth Schakowski’s most startling allegations in the suit is that her husband didn’t tell her for two years that he was the book’s author. ``The respondent’s clear intent was to keep the full monetary proceeds of the book for himself, without regard to his spouse’s financial rights,’’ alleges the divorce complaint.
The book outlines the exploits of a man who establishes a network of ``cyber-sex’’ partners over the Internet. The book’s commentary on sexual and religious issues in the computer age has drawn praise from some critics, but has been banned in several communities for its explicit language and descriptions of sex both in and out of cyberspace. It was the subject of an unusual Senate hearing last year in which its then-unnamed author testified while wearing a Marilyn Monroe mask in order to conceal his identity.

The boost in sales comes after reports that the book’s author, Adam Schakowski, is facing divorce by his wife on grounds that the many sexual encounters described in the book were real. In addition, more than a dozen other people from around the country are suing Schakowski on claims that they were the basis for the characters in his book.
Schakowski has been unavailable for comment, and his agent indicated this week that she isn’t sure where he is.
